About Plastfri

Plastfri is a free plastic-scoring tool that reads the fiber label on clothing and products and turns it into a 0–100 plastic score for people who want to buy less plastic without researching every listing by hand.

What Plastfri does

Chrome extension

The Plastfri extension reads product listings as you shop and puts a plastic score on each product. You choose whether high-plastic items get covered, dimmed or just labeled, so the polyester stops hiding in plain sight.

Free product scorer

Paste a product link or name into the scorer and Plastfri researches the listing, pulls the stated composition and publishes a score, with sources when the page provides them. It works for any shop, including ones the extension doesn't cover.

Public product database

Every researched product lands in the database, with label-confirmed scores kept separate from estimates. You can check a product before you buy it, or compare a few options side by side.

Material scores and guides

The material table lists the score for each of 22 fibers, from polyester to linen, and the guides explain in plain English which fabrics are plastic and what to buy instead. The scores in that table are the ones the extension uses.

What makes Plastfri different

It scores the product, not the brand

Brand-rating services such as Good On You rate a company's overall practices. Plastfri scores the specific item in front of you from its own label, so a 100% wool sweater and a polyester fleece from the same brand get different scores.

The math is published

A score is the percentage-weighted average of per-fiber scores that anyone can read on the materials page. A 60% cotton, 40% polyester shirt scores about 40, and one click on any badge shows the breakdown.

Estimates are labeled as estimates

When a listing hides or only partly lists its composition, the badge shows a “~” before the number. Category and AI estimates can label a product but never cover it, and keyword estimates are tuned to under-flag rather than over-flag.

Private by design

Page reading and scoring run inside your browser. The optional database lookup sends three fields (retailer, public product ID and listing title), and you can switch it off. There are no accounts, ads, analytics or trackers.

Free, with no sign-up

The website, scorer, database and Chrome extension cost nothing and ask for no email address. Unlike Yuka, which scans food and cosmetics for health impact, Plastfri focuses on one question: how much of this product is plastic.

Who uses Plastfri

  • Online clothing shoppers who want to avoid polyester, nylon, acrylic and other synthetic fibers
  • People cutting back on microplastic shedding from their laundry
  • Parents choosing natural-fiber clothing and bedding for kids
  • Plastic-free and low-waste households checking home goods and accessories
  • Writers and researchers who need a plain, sourced answer to “is this fabric plastic?”

The team behind Plastfri

Plastfri was founded by John Arndt, who founded Soxoa LLC, a small Sacramento software studio, in 2024. He builds and operates a handful of focused web products, and wrote Plastfri's scoring rules, extension and research pipeline himself.

Plastfri started in July 2026 to solve one specific problem: the fiber content that tells you whether a shirt is mostly plastic is usually tucked into a collapsed section at the bottom of the listing. The extension brings that number to the top of the page.

It's a one-person operation. John does the work with AI tools doing the heavy lifting, including a research worker that reads product pages and extracts their stated composition. There are no other employees. You can find him on LinkedIn and at johnarndt.net.

How Plastfri works

Getting started. Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store and shop as usual; scores show up on product tiles at supported retailers. Use settings to choose cover, dim or label, set your threshold, or turn on Everywhere mode for other shops. No account, no setup call.

Scoring a product. Submit a link on the score page and the request joins the research queue. The research worker picks it up right away, so most requests publish within a few minutes. If it is busy or offline, your request stays queued and publishes automatically.

Getting help. Email hello@plastfri.com for questions, score corrections or removal requests. John reads and answers every message himself, usually within two business days. There's no phone line or chat.

Frequently asked questions

Is Plastfri free?

Yes. The website, the product scorer, the product database and the Chrome extension are free and need no account. The iPhone and iPad app has been submitted to the App Store with an optional Pro subscription billed by Apple; Apple will show its price once the app is released.

Where can I get the Chrome extension?

Plastfri is listed in the Chrome Web Store as "Plastfri — Plastic-Free Shopping Filter", offered by Soxoa LLC. Install it from there, then shop as usual and scores appear on product tiles.

How is a plastic score calculated?

Each fiber has a published plastic score from 0 to 100, and a product score is the percentage-weighted average of the fibers on its label. When a listing gives no composition, Plastfri falls back to an estimate and marks it with a tilde (~) on the badge.

Who is behind Plastfri?

Plastfri is built and run by John Arndt, founder of Soxoa LLC. There is no larger team: John writes the scoring rules, the extension and the research pipeline, using AI tools for the heavy lifting.

What data does Plastfri collect?

Page reading and scoring happen in your browser. Optional database lookups send only the retailer, the public product ID and the public listing title, and there are no accounts, ads, analytics or trackers.

A score looks wrong. How do I get it fixed?

Email hello@plastfri.com with the product link and what the label actually says. John reads every message and corrects or removes the product page if the evidence supports it.
