Is lyocell plastic?
No — lyocell is regenerated wood cellulose made in a closed-loop process. It is the cleanest of the semi-synthetic fibers.
What lyocell actually is
Lyocell (Tencel is Lenzing’s brand) dissolves wood pulp in a non-toxic organic solvent (NMMO) that gets recovered and reused at rates above 99%. The result: a silky, breathable cellulose fiber with far less chemical baggage than viscose.
How Plastfri scores it
Lyocell scores 5/100 — effectively plastic-free. Blends score by composition, so “70% lyocell, 30% polyester” still shows the polyester.
Common questions
Is Tencel the same as lyocell?
Tencel is Lenzing AG’s brand of lyocell (and modal). Generic lyocell from other producers is the same fiber class.
Is lyocell better than cotton?
It uses dramatically less water than conventional cotton and no pesticides. Cotton wins on simplicity and repairability of the supply chain. Both are plastic-free.
