What acrylic is
Acrylic is plastic imitation wool: a fiber spun from polyacrylonitrile, a polymer made from oil-refinery propylene. It fills cheap sweaters, beanies, scarves, and blankets because it costs a fraction of wool and machine-washes without felting.
In University of Plymouth wash tests, acrylic shed more microfibers than polyester or poly-cotton blends. It also pills quickly and has effectively no recycling stream — worn-out acrylic is landfill.

Acrylic scores 100/100, and modacrylic is treated identically. A “70% acrylic, 30% wool” sweater scores 70 — the score follows the percentages, not the “wool blend” marketing.
The same weight applies everywhere: a product's score is the percentage-weighted plastic share of its listed fiber composition, and every weight is public.
