What lyocell is
Lyocell (Tencel is Lenzing’s brand) dissolves wood pulp in a non-toxic organic solvent that gets recovered and reused at rates above 99% — a closed loop. The result is a silky, breathable cellulose fiber with far less chemical baggage than viscose.
It is the cleanest of the semi-synthetics: plant-derived, biodegradable, and made with dramatically less water than conventional cotton.
How Plastfri scores it
Lyocell scores 5/100 — effectively plastic-free. Blends score by composition, so “70% lyocell, 30% polyester” still shows the polyester.
